901Voices: The Oral histories of Memphis

by The 100 Companies

A chorus of Memphis-based voices is in conversation at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library.

In a nod to the Bluff city’s area code, the 901Voices collection captures first-person accounts of local history – individuals like Kwame Oduro-Kusi, a Ghanaian who immigrated to Tennessee when he was 7 years old and graduated from Christian Brothers University, where he works today; and Marilyn Umfress, a native Memphian who attended East High School and has worked in the public library system for 34 years.

The goal remains to preserve Memphis history and build a stronger sense of community – one story at a time.
