Memphis’ street of Democratic dreams

by The 100 Companies

Deep in the heart of downtown Memphis, November 6th Street stands as a monument to American democracy – in particular, the day on which city residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of receiving public power from The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in 1935.

In Memphis, and across the state, affordable rates paved the way for electric refrigerators, stoves, fans and other conveniences that invariably made post-Depression Era domestic life easier and led to prosperity for all.

The tradition of weekday voting began in 1845 after Congress passed a federal law deeming the first Tuesday in November (following the first Monday) as Election Day.
