Andrew Young — civil rights pioneer, diplomat, former Georgia congressman and two-time Atlanta mayor — will serve as keynote speaker at the Hooks Institute’s annual gala. Young was also the first African-American United States ambassador to the United Nations, appointed in 1977 by then-president Jimmy Carter.
This is the 20th anniversary of the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change — named for Memphis civil rights icon Dr. Benjamin Hooks — which teaches, studies and promotes civil rights and social change. The gala will be held Thursday, April 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn.
