Equipped with a walkie-talkie and smile, Darterrio West takes his role as student assistant principal at Douglass High School seriously. The junior has been volunteering his services since his freshman year, helping administrators monitor the hallways between classes and serving as a mediator.
“Sometimes, it’s hard for adults and teens to understand where the other is coming from,” said West. “I can help resolve a situation and make both parties feel better about it.”
He says although he’s younger than some of the students at Douglass, his peers respect his position and often reach out to him for advice.
