Barber Gives Students Haircut and Life Lessons

by Michael Polzella

Neighborhood barber Fidell Woods provides free haircuts for students at Brewster Elementary School in Memphis each week. But there is a catch: students must read to him or show him they are doing schoolwork while seated in the chair.

Woods, who’s volunteered at Brewster Elementary for the last five years, also established a mentoring program at the school called Man Up, an opportunity for fathers of students to meet with Woods to discuss ways they can set positive examples.

He said he wants black men to understand the power of working together to ensure their children enjoy a successful future.
