A plan is in the works to light up the Interstate 40 Hernando DeSoto Bridge in a new way, just like the Big River Crossing.
Early next year, the Downtown Memphis Commission will replace all 196 of the light bulbs, from the 1980s, that outline the iconic “M” of the bridge with LED lighting. The Memphis City Council recently approved $12 million in private anonymous donations to pay for the light replacement on the I-40 bridge.
The lights will be white initially, with colored lights added later for special occasions and holidays, similar to the lights on Harahan Bridge.
