Transforming Memphis’ economy — Tri-State Bank

by The 100 Companies

Located in the historic Whitehaven Community, Elvis Presley Boulevard is home to many Black-owned businesses — the most historic of which is Tri-State Bank.

Founded in 1946 by Dr. J. E. Walker and his son A. Maceo Walker, the bank was instrumental in creating financial growth within Memphis’ Black community. They pioneered loans and greatly impacted home ownership for African Americans.

Tri-State Bank also played a roll in the Civil Rights Movement, planning local sit-ins at the bank’s board room and providing bail money for protesters.

To this day, they are minority-owned and continue to serve the community with four locations.
