For more than 65 years, the Enchanted Forest has served Memphis as a much-awaited holiday harbinger. It debuted at the Gayoso Hotel before moving to Goldsmith’s department store (now Macy’s) in the 1950s on a much grander scale with elaborate scenery, woodland creatures, snowmen, Santa Claus and many, many elves.
In the 1970s, Goldsmith employee Barry Hartzog began adding new storybook and film characters each year, making the forest even more magical. By then, it was also tradition for the team to hide inside exhibits and witness families’ reactions.
Today, the forest and its denizens reside in the Pink Palace Museum.
