Memphians might soon see a four-wheeled, box-shaped object rolling around town. Starting this summer, FedEx will begin testing its SameDay Bot – an autonomous robot that helps retailers make short-range deliveries.
The robot, which contains algorithms for detecting and avoiding obstacles, is equipped with a signaling screen to communicate its direction. To develop the technology, FedEx partnered with DEKA Development & Research Corp., which invented the Segway. It is poised to enhance FedEx’s same-day delivery services, which already exist in 1,900 cities worldwide.
Initially, FedEx will likely limit testing to larger retailers like Walmart, Walgreens and AutoZone.
