Theatre begins with the written word and March celebrates the significance and impact literacy and writers have in society. Directors, designers, dramaturgs and actors take the well-crafted work of poets, lyricists and playwrights. They imagine how what is written on the page can be transformed into something beautiful onstage.
Playhouse on the Square hosts the national playwriting competition, NewWorks@TheWorks, each year.
Submissions come from across the country. Six plays are chosen for staged readings before two are included in an upcoming season. Nearly 20 world premieres have been produced since 2013. Many have received national notoriety, including performances at The Kennedy Center.
