A new way to buy cars: Vending machines

by Michael Polzella

There are a lot of unusual things you can buy from vending machines: burritos, cupcakes, champagne, gold. Soon, Memphians may even be able to buy cars.

Online used-automobile seller Carvana has applied for a zoning change to build a new fulfillment center, or “vending machine,” on Interstate-40. Customers who make an online purchase would go to the pickup location, insert a large token into the vending machine and watch as their vehicle is robotically delivered.

The center would be the second in the state and one of 13 nationwide. The largest vending machine recently opened in Tempe, Arizona.
