Double Tree Elementary School’s Open-door Policy Tackles Bullying

by

One out of every five students reported being bullied last year, and many never report it. Shelby County schools, such as Double Tree Elementary, want students to feel safe at all times.

There’s an open-door policy where children who feel threatened can talk to any adult in the school. Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior that is repeated and involves a power imbalance. Warning signs include being withdrawn, depressed or scared to go to school, speaking of another child with fear, declining grades and a lack of self esteem.

With the right resources, children can keep some bullies at bay.
