Beat the Summer Heat

by Michael Polzella

Summers can be brutal. Unfortunately, as the temperatures rise, so do our chances of experiencing illness or death caused by extreme heat. We can’t prevent soaring temperatures and oppressive humidity, but we can prevent heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses.

Here are some tips:

• Stay hydrated. Do not allow yourself to become thirsty.

• Limit your time outdoors.

• Never leave people or pets in vehicles.

• Remember the three L’s for clothing – lightweight, light colored and loose fitting.

Always consult with your healthcare provider before making changes to your diet or routine. These tips are not a substitute for medical care.
