Superintendent’s Summer Learning Academy Yields Big Results for SCS

by
Students form Dunbar Elementary School in Memphis participate in the Summer Learning Academy.

Shelby County Schools is celebrating double-digit gains after reviewing data from its first-ever Superintendent’s Summer Learning Academy.

More than 6,200 students in kindergarten through fifth grade attended the free camp, designed to prevent summer learning loss. Students focused on reading and math, but also took part in field trips and other fun activities provided by more than 50 community partners. Research shows students normally lose two months of math knowledge over the summer, but SCS students involved in the summer academy gained two to five months of knowledge.

Nearly 300 non-SCS students also attended the camp.
