Farmers Markets Alleviate Food Insecurity

by

One of my favorite activities is perusing farmers markets. Tomato sandwiches are a warm-weather staple in my family, and finding that perfectly red, ripe fruit takes me back to my childhood in rural Tennessee.

But farmers markets do more than give us a reason to get up early on Saturday to purchase the best tomatoes. By providing locally sourced produce to food deserts – areas without access to fresh, whole foods – farmers markets help prevent food insecurity throughout our city.

Some of my favorites include: Cooper-Young Community Farmers Market, South Memphis Farmers Market and Overton Park Community Farmers Market.
