My daughter and I visited The Gentle Barn – Tennessee in Knoxville, which rescues, rehabilitates and gives sanctuary to severely abused animals.
Among the animals we befriended during our two-hour tour were a turkey named Luke Skywalker, a rooster named Rick Springfield, and my personal favorite, a large and gentle sow named Dream. Their stories were heartbreaking, but their willingness to trust people was inspiring.
Once rehabilitated, the animals spend time with abused and neglected children, who can identify with their painful stories. Animals’ unconditional love and non-judgmental attitude can often reach kids more deeply to help them heal.
