The fate of Aretha Franklin’s birthplace home

by

Following last month’s death of legendary soul singer Aretha Franklin, a movement to save her Memphis birthplace home has risen.

Aretha Franklin was born in a shotgun-style house at 406 Lucy Avenue in 1942. The house has since fallen into disrepair, but developer Jeffrey Higgs hopes to change that. Similar to Elvis’ Graceland mansion, the preserved house would honor Aretha, as well as her father, C.L. Franklin – the famous reverend and gospel music icon.

The Environmental Court gave Jeffrey Higgs – as well as the property’s current owner and any others interested – until Oct. 16 to present a plan.
