Last month, Mayor Jim Strickland and the city’s Division of Housing and Community Development launched the Memphis Heritage Trail, bringing together historical tourism, urban redevelopment and public art installations in order to honor African-American culture in Memphis.
The trail includes more than 50 sites of significance, including the Universal Life Building and National Civil Rights Museum. The tour features two art installations – the I AM A MAN Plaza near the Clayborn Temple and a MLK reflection site at Martin Luther King Boulevard and 2nd Street.
The project’s goals also include attracting tourists, renovating existing structures and improving residential neighborhoods.
