Martin Luther King Jr. fought for more than just racial justice. In fact, during his final days, a sanitation workers’ strike for better pay and safer working conditions brought the famed civil rights leader to Memphis.
Earlier this month, a memorial sculpture honoring these bold sanitation workers was dedicated at the I Am A Man Plaza. The 12-foot bronze-and-steel sculpture is an engraving of the words “I Am A Man,” with the names of the 1,300 strikers etched on the outside.
The name of the sculpture comes from the placards that marchers held during the strike.
